Axis2 Web Services tools inside Eclipse WTP October 12, 2007

1. Steve - October 25, 2007

Following the top down example I’ve generated an Axis2 client from a simple WSDL
using the web services generate client wizard.

The client proxy code generates OK and the JUnit tests run fine.

My problem is that I’d like to generate a JSP client test but the project wizard only shows the “Web Service Explorer” option in the test facility options combo.

Can you tell me what I need to do to enable this option?

sandakith - January 7, 2009

Hi steve,
To my knowladge its not yet implemented on Axis2 as a feature.. Please have a look at bugzilla for the project.. You can file a improvement for it.

2. sandakith - October 26, 2007

Hi Steve,
Nice to here that you are interested in more features. Actually we do not support the JSP client requirement yet. There are open improvements and we are working on it. Most of those improvements will be available on the next release of WTP (a.k.a 3.0)

3. Bruno - October 28, 2007

Hi Lahiru,

I try to install Axis2 on Eclipse WTP and have the following error: class not found: org.apache.axis2.mex.MetadataExchangeModule, when I start the server

4. sandakith - October 29, 2007

Hi Lahiru,

There was an issue reported on eclipse bugzilla on Axis2 1.3
Can you confirm wether this is the same issue.

5. sandakith - November 20, 2007

Hi Bruno,
this issue was resolved and closed.

Hi Lahiru,

I’m using wtp-all-in-one-sdk-R-2.0.1-20070926042742-win32 with axis 1.3 and I got the same problem. How can I fix it?
The eclipse bug link don´t help me…

Thanks in advance.

7. sandakith - November 24, 2007

Hi Jose,
The issue is fixed in the wtp cvs head now. You can get the latest maintenance release from the http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/downloads/
But actually you ca very easily locally patch the jar and repackage it and get it work.
Here is the procedure.
1) find the in your eclipse/plugin directory
2) cut and paste it to another location
3) extract the org.eclipse.jst.ws.axis2.core.*jar file.
4) find the Axis2Constants.class and replace it with the http://people.apache.org/~sandakith/wtp_axis2_mex_issue_patch/Axis2Constants.class
5) repackage it as it was earlier
6) insert the jar in to the eclipse plugin directory
7) restart eclipse

Hi Lahiru,

I am new to Eclipse and Axis 2. I’m using the following tutorial to set up Web Service:

When I try to run the web service & sstart the server, I get the following exception:

[ERROR] The mex-1.3.mar module, which is not valid, caused org.apache.axis2.mex.MetadataExchangeModule

I am using Eclipse Version: tried with WTP 2.0 & 2.2, JDK Version: 1.6.0_03, Axis 2 Version: 1.3 and tried with Tomcat Verstion: 6.0.16 as well as Jboss 4.2.2GA.

Tried above solutions as well as the eclipse bug link and they don’t resolve the issue. Any other suggestions to resolve this?

Thanks, Shivani

9. sandakith - February 22, 2008

Hi Shivani,

The issue was resolved now.

10. Shivani - February 24, 2008

Hi Lahiru,

Thank you for a quick response. The previous error is resolved and now I have a different error and hoping that you can help me with it. I am using I am using Eclipse Version:, JDK Version: 1.6.0_03, Axis 2 Version: 1.3 & Jboss 4.2.2GA.

Error: IWAB0489E Error when deploying Web service to Axis runtime
axis-admin failed with {http://xml.apache.org/axis/}HTTP (404)/Axis2WSTest/services/AdminService

The server console does not show any errors. When I try to run the project, I get HTTP Status 404 – /Axis2WSTest/ error with description: The requested resource (/Axis2WSTest/) is not available.

Any suggestion son how I can fix this?

11. Dinesh Bolkensteyn - March 27, 2008

Hi all,

I just had the same issue , “21:00:56,515 INFO [STDOUT] [ERROR] The mex-1.3.mar module, which is not valid, caused org.apache.axis2.mex.MetadataExchangeModule”

I tried to create the web service according to the tutorial using the following versions of Eclipse :

– eclipse-jee-europa-winter-win32.zip , without & with all the available software updates + with manual fix of Axis Core jar file as explained above
– eclipse-jee-ganymede-M5-win32.zip

And it still doesn’t work.

I even still get the same problem when I try to downgrade to Axis 1.2 (by replacing the 1.3 .war file by the 1.2 one in JBoss and relaunching the server).

I really don’t don’t understand why it doesn’t work.

The fixes should IMHO already be integrated to the binary builds by now.

I even reinstalled JBoss 4.2.2 and reinstalled Axis 1.2 (to have a clean server), and I’m still getting that error message, which is really weird (+boring).

12. Dinesh Bolkensteyn - March 27, 2008

finally, I got it to work :

– The thing is that, if you want to downgrade to Axis 1.2 , you’ll need to recreate your Dynamic Web Project.
– You *NEED* to use the Dynamic Web Module version 2.4 on that screenshot (http://www.eclipsecon.com/webtools/community/tutorials/BottomUpAxis2WebService/images/a3_n.png) , otherwise, if you use 2.5, you’ll end up with an error 404
– On the following screen (http://www.eclipsecon.com/webtools/community/tutorials/BottomUpAxis2WebService/images/c2_a.png), if you get a “Service EAR” link as well (under Service project), you can leave it as suggested (which is project name + “EAR”)

I’ve got no idea of what I am doing, but this finally works 😉

So I can now play with those web services, great ^^

13. Muroogan - April 17, 2008

Hi Lahiru,

I was trying ur tutorial

WTP Tutorials – Creating Bottom Up Web Service via Axis2

but I couldn’t get the

when creating the webservices client…

am I missing something

14. Muroogan - April 17, 2008

it creates only ConverterCallbackHandler.java and ConverterStub.java

15. Rômulo Fernandes - June 23, 2008

I’m new to AXIS2 and WTP.

I got stucked at that 404 page. When I try to run the project in the server it can’t find any page. I created the project with Dynamic Web Module 2.4 (as advertised before), Axis 1.2, TomCat 6.0, JDK 1.6 Update 6.

I’ve managed to make it work partially using a standard Java project and creating a WebService from a class. The problem with this is that I can’t access MySQL (The driver is in a .JAR in the standard Java project’s Class Path)

I have another question. After working, how do I deploy this server ?

16. chintan - July 4, 2008

I am using axis 2.1.4 ,tomcat 6.0 and jdk 1.6 . with eclipse wtp. I have setted tomcat as runtime. i am trying to create web services using eclipse wtp tools. and getting 404 error. please help me …

17. harpreet - September 3, 2008

how i can generate client using wtp that use xmlbeans binding

18. Markus - September 14, 2008

I’ve the same problem as number 10. ans number 16.
I use Tomcat 6.0.18, Eclipse 3.4 and Axis2-1.4.1 with Java 6 under Windows XP.
I tried the bottom-up Tutorial and everything works fine, the server starts perfectly without errors but I get a 404 Error, too
It’ strange. It seems that the tomcat isn’s configured correctly, so he doesnt find his Welcome-Page if it’s started by eclipse

any idea ???

19. Markus - September 14, 2008

after a few experiments … if you put an index.html under der WebContent-folder the pages is shown correctly. So in combination with axis2 as webservice-framework I think that maybe the deployment descriptor of the dynamic web project isn’t correct or it isn’t called correctly or the tomcat context isn’t correct.

What’s to do ???

20. Erik - September 16, 2008

One hint about the 404 error: enable the directory listing in the web.xml of your Tomcat server :

Then you will see that your project is available under

I’m missing the services shown in the tutorial. Any ideas?

21. Asokan - September 17, 2008

An error occured while completing the process. -java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException

This error is thrown while using codegen tool from eclipse when clicking on finish button.

Nothing in the eclipse metada logs. Dont find any clue for reason behind the error. On the web i see the issue posted many times but no clear solutions suggested

any ideas pls?

22. Sridhar - September 18, 2008

Hi Sandakith,
I’m trying to create a web service using the top down approach. I have installed the Axis2 Eclipse codegen plugins
and tried to use a WSDL to generate the web service. But it failed. It kept throwing InterruptedException.

Here is the WSDL I used. Can you help in finding the solution for this?

23. Gabriel Garcia - October 13, 2008

Hi Sridhar!

You need to include this 2 jars in the lib folfer of your Axis2 Eclipse Codegen plugin:

I got them from a download of axis2-1.4.1

hope this helps

24. Bert Mengerink - October 14, 2008

Dear Sandakith,

I have developped some web services succesfully with your tutorial “Creating Top Down Web Service via Apache Axis2”, but recently I get compilation errors, even when I try to create a service from scratch.
The error is, that in the TtsServiceMessageReceiverInOut.java the javax.xml.stream.XMLStreamException cannot be resolved. It also goes wrong in HappyAxis.jsp, where javax.xml.stream.XMLOutputFactory and javax.xml.stream.XMLStreamException cannot be resolved.

I am using Eclipse Europe 3.3.0 with Axis2 1.4.1 and Tomcat 6.0.18 under Java 6.

Kind regards,
Bert Mengerink

What can be the case here? It is available in the

26. Ricardo Clements - December 8, 2008

I get the following error trying to deploy the sample
Deploying Exception Occured with java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\jboss-4.2.0.GA\server\default\.\tmp\deploy\tmp4928Axis2WebService-EAR.ear-contents\Axis2WebService-exp.war\WEB-INF (Access is denied)

not sure why the deployment is trying to work with default\.\tmp and not default\tmp…

28. Rajat - February 19, 2009

I am facing the same problem as Muroogan had. I am also new in web services. Please help

29. Schley Andrew Kutz - March 16, 2009

I’m also having the problem where when following the tutorial, the Run As or Debug As on the Server takes me to my URL, but I have to append “axis2-web” to make it work. Is there a configuration item I am missing?

30. Jason - March 23, 2009

I am tryingn to do the top down approach.

After Step 15, the image is missing in the tutorial.

After going through the steps, I get a HTTP Status 404 when I run it on the server

I am not sure what I am doing wrong. The only thing I missed was on Step 15:

“Then we need to change the output location of the project to the location where the service is deployed in the local web service runtime attached to the project. As in this example to the folder WebContent -> axi2-web -> WEB-INF -> services -> Axis2TestWs directory.”

I am not sure what you mean there. Also, under the folder, axis2-web/ there is NO WEB-INF folder, only the following:

Joris - June 15, 2009

In the project properties, in the Source tab of the Java Build Path, I set the Default output folder to:

31. Dennis - March 25, 2009

Hi guys, can you send me an email on how to connect a webservice to a mysql database? Thanks in advance

32. Rodrigo Valin - May 11, 2009

I was following http://wiki.eclipse.org/Creating_a_bottom-up_Axis2_Web_service and received, as everybody, a 404 response from the server. My configuration is as follows:
Axis 1.4.1
Tomcat 6.0.18
Eclipse Ganymede-EE 3.4.2
MacOSX 10.5.6

I was able to access the Axis2WSTest/axis2-web directory after changing ‘listing’ parameter to ‘true’ in Tomcat’s web.xml config file. After that I’m able to GET http://localhost:8080/Axis2WSTest/axis2-web/ to check deployed services, wsdls and access the admin console.

33. shashank - June 10, 2009

I resolved HTTP 404 error.

Go to Project properties – Project facet – check first box for Axis 2. Make sure you version “2.4” for Dynamic Web Project.

That’ s it!1

Dev - July 27, 2009

thanks man,
Worked like a charm.

34. Bala and Herryt - June 29, 2009

We ran into the same problem and resolved it by editing the /WEB-INF/web.xml.
We added
/axis2-web/index.jsp to the welcome-file-list.

We also added
to the apache-Axis servlet entry .
